WHAT IS THE ROYAL AUXILIARY AIR FORCE

The Royal Auxiliary Air Force is the reserve element of the Royal Air Force - the RAF equivalent of the Territorial Army (TA).

609 (West Riding) Squadron is based at RAF Leeming and trains men and women aged 17 - 50 (or 55 with military experience) to augment the Royal Air Force during both peacetime and war.

Our primary role is Force Protection, defined as 'Measures necessary to prevent an enemy from attacking successfully, or minimising the effects of an attack, so as to enable the continued prosecution of air operations with the minimum of degradation or delay' We also offer trade training in a number of RAF trades, which allow our people to work alongside regular members of the Royal Air Force.
