Filey volunteer takes on Taiwanese jungle to raise funds for Sea Cadets

A Filey volunteer is on track to raise £2,000 for the Sea Cadets after donning his trainers and undertaking a gruelling 17km jungle trek in Taiwan.

Nick Ingham, who is a non-uniformed Sea Cadet volunteer, wanted to raise funds for the organisation he credits with the success he has enjoyed in his adult life. He took part in an extreme run called ‘Run the Jungle III’, which saw him and a number of colleagues run through more than 10 miles of some of the wildest Taiwanese jungle and over several small mountains.

Nick is currently Eastern Area Chairman, one of six in the country, and also sits on the National Sea Cadet Advisory Council. He is a retired Warfare Officer and left the Royal Navy in 2007.

He explains why he decided to undertake the jungle challenge.

“I ran a total distance of 17 km alongside several of my colleagues,” he said. “The arduous run takes you through the thickest of the Taiwanese jungle and over several small mountains.

“Whilst I’ve done a few things like this before under duress in the military, this was the first time I’ve tackled anything like this for fun. Hence why I didn’t let the opportunity of raising money for charity go to waste.

“I’m extremely passionate about the Sea Cadets. As an ex-Sea Cadet myself I attribute my successes in adult life solely to the opportunities that the Sea Cadets presented me in my youth.

“My son is now a Junior Cadet and is reaping the same benefits. I genuinely love seeing the impact that the Sea Cadets has on young people not only locally in my home town but on a national platform.”
