Mayor pays tribute to ‘remarkable’ cadet

The bravery of a ‘remarkable’ cadet who fought a knife-wielding robber has been officially recognised.

Alex Jeanguillaume, aged 15, pictured left, is a newly promoted cadet sergeant at Otley Detachment of Yorkshire (North and West) Army Cadet Force’s C Company.

She was with her friend Edwin Tosney in a park in the town when she was threatened by a man with a knife last summer.

Knife threat

He ordered the teenagers to hand over their mobile phones, but they refused. When he motioned with a knife as if he was going to attack Edwin, Alex used her ju-jitsu skills to grab him and throw him to the ground.

Town Mayor Coun Peter Jackson, right, presented the pupil of Prince Henry’s Grammar School with a special award for bravery.

He described Alex, who has been a member of Otley’s ju-jitsu club since she was five, as ‘a credit to our teenage community’.
