At the beginning of September, swimmers from across the 33 Air Cadet squadrons of South and West Yorkshire Wing, gathered at Huddersfield Sports Centre for the annual Swimming Championships.
Cadets from 868 (Mirfield) Squadron enjoyed a very successful day, emerging as winners of the Championships; also winning the Senior Girls and Overall Girls Trophies and coming a very close second in the Overall Boys Trophy.
Along the way to their victory, the Mirfield cadets also collected a healthy assortment of medals:
Rebecca Jagger – Bronze (junior girls breaststroke)
Cora Smith – Bronze (junior girls backstroke)
Kiara Baillie – Gold (senior girls butterfly, backstroke and individual medley)
Abbey Jacobsen-Jones – Bronze (senior girls freestyle)
Daniel Green – Silver (junior boys breaststroke freestyle relay)
Matthew Jagger – Bronze (senior boys breaststroke)
Joshua Kelly – Gold (senior boys backstroke) and Silver (individual medley)
Sergeant Baillie and Sergeant Kelly will now go on to represent South and West Yorkshire Wing in the Regional competition.
After the announcement of the results, Mirfield’s Squadron Commander, Flight Lieutenant Peter Doubell, praised the cadets’ performance: “All our cadets have performed excellently today. Not only the medal winners, but all the others who have turned out to support them in the team and compete in all the events. It is their participation as well as the race winners that has led to the overall success in winning the Championships. A big thank you and well done to everyone!”
