As the New Year advances SaBRE has continued in their effort to promote reservist opportunities to local employers. Last week saw a key event in the engagement calendar with SaBRE sponsoring the Leeds Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner.
The event proved to be an excellent opportunity to raise awareness of reservists with over 300 business leaders from across the region in attendance given that Leeds Chamber is part of West and North Yorkshire Chamber which includes Bradford Chamber and York and North Yorkshire Chamber.
The dinner was the last for outgoing president Nigel Foster, with vice president Gerald Jennings, Portfolio Director of Land Securities taking over the reins this Spring.
Nigel reflected on his four year tenure as President and said he was proud to see progress in the city, in particular the creation of Leeds’ first University Technical College (UTC) which shows the city’s commitment to invest in skills and manufacturing.
Diners enjoyed business journalist Declan Curry’s address where he shared his view of the global and local economy and his optimism for Leeds as its balanced economy and potential to collaborate and export puts the city in a strong position.
Richard Lenton, Regional SaBRE Campaign Director for Yorkshire and The Humber was joined at the dinner by Helen Clarke of Barclays Bank and Masoud Ghorbani of LCI Media who as a result of the evenings discussions are both interested in exploring future opportunities to work with the MOD to increase opportunities for reservists within their business.
The dinner also provided a platform for Sabre to gauge interest in Exercise Executive Stretch 15. Leaflets and expression of interest forms were on each table for delegates to complete. This year Exercise Executive Stretch will take place at Strensall barracks near York. The three day residential event held from 11th-13th June provides employers of reservists with a unique opportunity to take part in many of the military style activities and tasks undertaken by their reservist staff on a regular basis, and allows employers a chance to fully appreciate the diverse skills set their staff possess. Tickets are currently £180 per participant and represent excellent value given the uniqueness of this opportunity.
Entertainment was provided by writer and comedian Steve Punt who delighted the audience ensuring they all left with a smile on their faces.
The evening also included a charity auction for prizes donated by The Grand Hotel and Spa, Trinity Leeds, White Rose Shopping Centre, Land Securities and The Queens. A total of £2,305.50 was raised for Leeds Chamber’s charity of the year, Leeds Mind.
