Two air cadets from 868 (Mirfield) Squadron have been selected by Wing Commander Brian Daniel as the nominations for South and West Yorkshire Wing in the annual national competition to find the year’s best cadets.

Selection was based on the cadets’ achievements, their personal presentation and an interview.

Flight Sergeant Joe Jenkinson was nominated for the Dacre Sword (best male cadet); among his achievements are:

  • Lord Lieutenants’ Cadet for West Yorkshire
  • Air Cadet Pilot Scheme
  • International Air Cadet Exchange to Canada
  • Air Cadet Leadership
  • Duke Edinburgh Award (Silver)
  • Currently on Junior Leaders Course

Sergeant Kiara Baillie (pictured) was nominated for the ATC 75 Sword (best female cadet); among her achievements are:

  • Wing Sports representation for all possible girls’ sports (Swimming, Hockey, Netball, Cross Country and Athletics)
  • Selection for this year’s Air Cadet Pilot Scheme
  • Youth First Aid qualification and member of the competition team that won both Wing and Regional competitions in 2016
  • Duke of Edinburgh Award (Bronze)

The two cadets were put forward by their Squadron Commander Flight Lieutenant Peter Doubell, who commented “it is very unusual for both candidates to have been picked from the same Squadron, but these are two exceptional young people and we are proud to have them at our Squadron. Each has achieved a great deal during their time with us, but they also have so much more to gain in the future. They really are a splendid example of the youth of this country and what can be gained by putting themselves out to achieve.”
