Yorkshire reservists on deployment in Afghanistan

What do an IT expert, a barman, two NHS workers and a cinema manager have in common?

They are all reservists currently serving with the 4th Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment (4YORKS) in Afghanistan.

“Each of us comes from very different walks of life in the civilian world but we all see this operation as an experience we are trained to do and something we wouldn’t have wanted to miss,” said Lance Corporal Karl Briggs, of Bramley Leeds, pictured third from the right.

The troops are in Afghanistan as part of Operation TORAL and have joined reservists from 4th Battalion The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment to support regular soldiers from the 2nd Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment as part of a 500-strong battlegroup.

Five of the reservists are from Leeds-based Corunna Company and include Private Jamie Richards from Leeds, pictured third from the left. Jamie is an assistant physiotherapy practitioner at St James’ Hospital in Leeds and he said:

“I love my job in the NHS so being in the reserves is a great way of combining it with a career in the military.”
