“I joined the Army Cadets after being inspired by my dad who was a cadet himself. Growing up, I heard many of his stories about the experiences he had, the skills he learned, and the friends he made. That inspired me to join and see what it was like for myself. Looking back now, it was one of the best decisions I have ever made.
“When I first joined, I was not completely sure what to expect, but I quickly discovered how many opportunities being a cadet offers. From the very beginning, there was a real sense of teamwork and support, and everyone helped each other develop new skills and confidence. Over time, I started to get more involved in different activities and events, which helped me grow both as a cadet and as a person.
Interesting and rewarding
“One of the areas I have enjoyed the most is first aid. I find it really interesting and rewarding to learn skills that could genuinely help someone in an emergency. It is a great feeling knowing that the training we receive could one day make a real difference. I have also really enjoyed attending camps, which are always a highlight of the year. They give you the chance to practice everything you have learned, try new activities, and spend time with other cadets who share the same enthusiasm.
“Over the years I have attended several annual camps, and each one has been a great experience. More recently, I have also had the opportunity to help and support some teaching some activities. It’s felt really rewarding to be able to pass on the knowledge I’ve gained to other cadets. It’s great to see others develop their skills, just like I did when I first joined.
“Cadets has also given me the chance to get involved in the local community, whether it be bag packing at supermarkets, remembrance service or fundraising at events such as Match for Heroes. . It’s a fantastic way to give back and represent the cadet organisation in a positive way.
Qualifications to be proud of
“During my time in cadets, I have also been able to achieve some qualifications that I am really proud of. I have gained a Level 2 BTEC in Leadership and I have completed my Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Both have helped me develop important life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and perseverance.
“One of the biggest things cadets has given me is confidence. When I first joined, I was quite nervous and unsure of myself, but over time cadets has helped me build my confidence massively. Through training, camps, and working with others, I have developed strong teamwork skills and built friendships that will last for many years.
Huge honour
“One of my proudest achievements so far has been being selected as a Lord-Lieutenant Cadet. It’s a huge honour and something I’m incredibly proud of. The role has given me a real sense of responsibility and the opportunity to represent the cadet organisation at important events. It’s been an amazing experience and something I’ll always remember.
“Being a cadet is about so much more than just training. It’s about the friendships you make, the opportunities you’re given, and the confidence you gain along the way. If anyone is thinking about joining cadets, I would definitely encourage them to give it a try. You never know where the experience might take you.”
