Two of the regions cadet forces have been awarded the Honorary Freedom of the City of Kingston upon Hull at a special ceremony led by Hull City Council.
Humberside and South Yorkshire Army Cadet Force (HSY ACF) and 152 (City of Hull) Squadron air cadets were given the award in recognition and appreciation of service to the City of Hull.
They were bestowed the honour at an Extraordinary Meeting of Full Council at the Guildhall in Hull on 21st March in the presence of the Lord Mayor and Admiral of the Humber, Councillor Kalvin Neal.
Symbolises the strong bond
Commandant of HSY ACF, Colonel Fred Owen said: “It is with immense pride that we receive the Honour of the Freedom of the City of Kingston upon Hull.
“This recognition truly symbolises the strong bond between our cadet force and the community. Hull’s tradition of honouring the armed forces dates back centuries, reflecting a deep-seated respect for those who serve our nation. By extending this honour to the Army Cadet Force, the City not only acknowledges our dedication but also invests in the future of our community.
“For the cadets and adult volunteers, this recognition is a testament to their commitment and service. It highlights the invaluable contributions they make to our society through their selfless dedication to learning, leadership, and community engagement.
“This historic occasion not only strengthens our ties with the people of Hull but also reaffirms the mutual benefits of our partnership. Through shared values of discipline, resilience, and service, both the Army Cadet Force and the City of Hull stand to gain, fostering a brighter future for generations to come. “
Officer Commanding of 152 (City of Hull) Squadron, Squadron Leader Danielle Cooper said: “Hull air cadets has a long standing connection with Hull and being conferred the honorary Freedom of the City was a very important moment in the squadrons history.
“It was with great pride that I accepted the prestigious honour on behalf of member past and present.”
Teamwork an leadership
Lord Mayor and Admiral of the Humber, Cllr Kalvin Neal said: “These groups allow young people to develop so many skills, such as teamwork and leadership, while also boosting their self-confidence.
“The activities they do are fun, exciting and rewarding, and they help to develop young people of all abilities and backgrounds, both physically and mentally.”
Following their award the cadets are now eligible to take part in the Freedom of the City parade on Sunday 14th April, which will set off from Hull Minster at 11am.
