Yorkshire teen Naomi Thornton has taken up the role of First Sea Lord Cadet for the Eastern Area Sea Cadets 2021.
The marine cadet from Meersbrook, has been honoured with the role in acknowledgement of her hard work and dedication to duty with Sheffield Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets.
The 16-year-old pupil of Sheffield’s Notre Dame High School has been a member of the cadets for six years and holds the rank of Cadet Corporal.
Six of the best
Only six of the best cadets in the country are awarded the title of First Sea Lord’s Cadet each year.
Her new duties will include meeting with the head of the Royal Navy First Sea Lord and the Navy Board, which consists of other high-ranking Royal Navy Officers including the Royal Navy’s senior management board and representing her region.
Naomi, who is currently studying her A levels, said: “I’m really excited but unsure because of Covid. I’m looking forward to all that is included in the role but the pandemic means the situation is constantly changing.”
Activities at home and abroad
She has immersed herself in activities with the Royal Marine Cadets since joining, taking part in courses and events all over the UK and abroad.
She has also travelled to the USA on an exchange programme, representing the Marine Cadets and meeting senior officers in the US Navy.
Naomi’s mother Sarah said: “I’m very proud of her and really excited for the opportunities she has ahead.”
Away from the cadets, Naomi enjoys orienteering. She took on her new role at the beginning of this year.
