Catering teacher and head of year 8 at Manor Church of England school in York first put forward the idea of a Combined Cadet Force to the headteacher over five years ago and was delighted that he agreed. Since it’s inception the unit has grown and they now have over 80 cadets parading at the detachment.
“I started the CCF because I’d seen my son go through the air cadets and realised what a difference it made to him and I wanted to make a difference to students at Manor.
Make a real difference
“It was really easy to get volunteers to help as we are all like-minded and want to give something back to students and make a real difference. It’s also an awful lot of fun to experience things like gorge walking or mountain biking and challenging myself to try new things in the same way as the cadets are challenged.
We are all volunteers and our reward is seeing how much enjoyment our cadets get out of the cadet experience.”
