“I joined the ACF over six years ago. It was the best decision I have ever made.
“Before joining, I was shy and didn’t feel like stepping out of my comfort zone at all. The first time I went to my detachment I was scared of meeting new people but once I stepped through the door, I was welcomed warmly by everybody there. Since that first night I have made unforgettable memories and made friends for life. My confidence has grown so much, and I feel I have grown into an independent, responsible and caring person.
First camp
“I kicked it off straight away by going on my first camp a little over a month after I joined the ACF, and quickly climbed the ladder by passing courses such as first aid, field craft, drill and much more. My first camp was scarier than my first detachment night. I had to meet so many new people and loads of adult instructors but as a new cadet, they made sure I was on the right track and was involved in the things other cadets were doing. All the remarkable instructors and senior cadets I have met along the way have made my time in cadets so worthwhile. I have become friends with people from all over the country and many more from the armed forces, all of whom give me advice about cadets and my future.
Development and opportunities
“During my cadet experience, I consistently earned promotions and progressed to Cadet Company Sergeant Major for a company of over 140 people. Moving up the star levels was difficult as Covid-19 struck but that has not stopped me from moving forward. I’m on track to reach my goal of completing the prestigious master cadet course later in 2024.
“Cadets isn’t all about learning and following lessons though. I have had the privilege to take part in amazing opportunities such as going to France for a Remembrance trip and taking on my most rewarding endeavour yet – parachuting in Netheravon, Wiltshire where I trained and solo jumped out of a plane from 3,500 feet! This was a brilliant experience that I never would have had the confidence to do without being in the cadets.
Recognition and Awards
“I am humbled to have received several awards throughout my cadet experience such as best in my company when I was a Junior Non-Commissioned Officer and the Merchant Adventurers Tankard for my commitment to the organisation and being a role model during my time as a Cadet Company Sergeant Major.
“I am most honoured to be appointed as Lord-Lieutenant Cadet for North Yorkshire and privileged to serve this role which involves attending ceremonial events throughout the county.
“Being a cadet has changed my life tremendously. From all the people I have met to all the opportunities and life skills/qualifications I have earnt, this has all helped me to be a role model for the younger cadets. If you are looking for something to do and want some fun and adventure I would definitely recommend dropping into your local ACF detachment to find out more!”
