York College achieves ‘Silver’ on the Employer Recognition Scheme for their support to the Armed Forces community.
Receiving Silver ERS
In 2024, York College was recognised as a ‘Silver’ employer by the Ministry of Defence for its HR programmes and policies that endorse their employees who are military personnel (current, former and associated) and enable development opportunities that support their current or past duty to the forces with their civilian employment. The scheme also encourages the overall support of the general armed forces community.
Being forces-friendly
The College employs 15 service people including veterans, reservists and volunteers and provides a working environment where veterans can use transferable skills from their military experience to deliver educational provision and management. Principal and CEO, Ken Merry describes this as a ‘richness’ that adds value to the College and teaching. The College is also committed to its forums where veterans and Armed Forces personnel can meet to discuss activity that supports the Armed Forces such as Remembrance Day events and learning opportunities that honour the services.
Providing support
As the College is located in a Garrison city, there are students enrolled at the college who are from military families. Kyle Alexander, Curriculum Director and Armed Forces Lead, says the College is committed to providing the pastoral care for these students who may frequently be ‘ on the move’ to their military family’s frequent moves and stationing.
York College and University Centre’s Principal and Chief Executive Ken Merry:
“It is a great honour for York College to receive the ERS Silver Award. It highlights our steadfast commitment to supporting the defence and armed forces community across York and North Yorkshire. We are fiercely proud of all our staff who have served in the Armed Forces and this recognition aligns perfectly with our values and our dedication to upholding the principles of the Armed Forces Covenant.”
